According to a U.S. Government safety presentation posted on several government Web sites, an average of 400 holiday season fires each year cause $15 million in property damage, 70 injuries, and 20 deaths. Careless handling of holiday decorations contributes to the likelihood of fire damage. For example, storing indoor and outdoor decorations together could cause indoor extension cords to be inadvertently used outdoors.
The presentation also states that outdoor cords are neutral to the ground and better insulated to handle outdoor weather and wear and tear. Additionally, homeowners should use only UL or FM approved extension cords and inspect them for damage when putting them away for the year and again when taking them out next holiday season.
Correct storage of holiday lawn decoration accomplishes several objectives:

Prevents household fires by properly storing electric lights and power cords
•
Protects favorite lights and yard decorations from breakage
